Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need to know how to do Yoga to come?

Nope! You simply need an open mind. The Yoga we’re doing isn’t advanced — although there are options for that. Rather, we’re doing moving meditations that focus on deep relaxation, introspection, and connection to the body and to the true Self. You just have to not be totttallly grossed out by that sentence to come. If you’re a little grossed out, that’s okay. You can still come.

  • What kind of writing workshops will there be?

I mold each retreat to the goals of the attendees. To take advantage of the group’s wisdom, there will be opportunities to pitch on each other’s ideas, in addition to craft workshops (building compelling characters and emotional arcs, etc) and introspective, trauma-informed writing workshops (focuses on creative blocks, finding your voice, etc). There are also options for private consultations and feedback on your work throughout the week.

  • What if I’m not a screenwriter? I’m a journalist, novelist, or have a completely different non-writing job.

Totally cool! All sorts of creatives have attended and benefited from these retreats: Screenwriters, novelists, poets, comedians, journalists, teachers, and people in math, science, and marketing careers who are unfulfilled in their day jobs and have always wanted to write. I will meet you where you are. Before I got into TV, I worked as a journalist as well, and I shape each retreat to best serve the needs of the attendees.

  • What if I’m a professional writer who isn’t interested in taking classes or workshops? I’m just craving alone time to write.

Skip the classes to opt for free writing time. There is nothing better than isolating in nature, hunkering down, and finally getting writing done. Throughout the week you can share your work with me, and other attendees writing on a professional level, for notes and feedback. (And I do still recommend the workshops, especially the introspective ones!)

  • How much writing will I get done?

If your goal is to write, you can write for hours every day. You’ll also have dedicated time in workshops to discuss your projects, ask questions, and learn. However, many people find themselves inspired to explore, adventure, socialize, or relax during their free time. The majority of participants treat this as a vacation that also provides the chance to learn, get inspired, deepen their spiritual practice, and meet other creatives.

I’d come into this retreat with plans to look inward, connect to yourself creatively, get a new perspective, learn, and get notes and feedback on your writing. If you’re looking to isolate yourself to finish a script in a week, going to a beautiful new country you’re excited to explore with a bunch of people probably isn’t the answer. Take yourself on a solo writing retreat instead!

  • Am I too young or old to attend?

Our youngest participant so far has been 24, and our oldest 60. And actually, those two were on the same retreat and became great friends! While you do have to be over 21 to attend, these retreats are safe, welcoming, and friendly spaces regardless of age.

  • I have a dietary restriction.

Cool! Me too. Gluten-free and vegan meals are available on all retreats. If you have other restrictions, let me know and we’ll work it out.

  • I want to come, but I’ve never traveled and I’m afraid of going to these places alone with people I don’t know!

Traveling alone is one of the best ways to build confidence, prove to yourself how capable you are, and learn what you most deeply want. It’s a freeing, beautiful experience. Retreats are an incredible way to start solo traveling. I will be there every step of the way to help with planning. You’ll also have a support system of other attendees traveling to the same destination. Meeting new people from around the world who share your interests is such a special, rare experience. And if you end up hating every second of traveling? Great. Now you know that about yourself.

  • I’m worried about the group dynamics or am an introvert.

We will spend a lot of time with each other and the community-building aspect is one of the best parts of the retreats! The retreats are self-selecting: Each one has been filled with incredible people, and it’s always felt like the Universe brought this specific group together for a reason.

If you’re an introvert, that’s all good. Lots of introverts come and either choose to get a private room, or use their daily free time to recharge with a solo activity.

Each retreat has a different level of intimacy. For people who are excited about making new friends and being part of a small group, the Costa Rica retreat is great. If solo time is crucial, larger retreats (like Greece) typically make it easier to do your own thing.

  • Can I come late or leave early?

People coming and going changes the dynamic of the group. If you can’t stay for the whole week, I recommend waiting for a future retreat that you can be fully present during. (This is different, of course, in case of emergencies or unexpected personal matters that require you to change your plans at the last minute.)

  • What if I need to cancel? Is it refundable?

Registration requires a $500 non-refundable deposit. The remaining payment is due 3 months before the retreat, at which point it is nonrefundable with no exceptions.

  • Are there payment plans available?

Yep! After the initial deposit of $500, you can pay me in monthly installments over the course of several months, depending on how far in advance you register.

  • Are discounts available?

I offer a discount to paid Substack subscribers, and early bird pricing for the first 2-3 months after I announce retreats.
